Sounds like a codec error, or your cpu can't handle it.  Install and run gkrellm, watch your cpu when it plays, see if it spikes or plateaus.

What encoding are your videos?

Does gstreamer/totem work ok?

What video card do you have (ie. hardware decode support)?

VLC and gstreamer-based front-ends work way different I find, each with varying reliability in certain codecs.
