'VLC media player 2.0.8 Twoflower' is the version installed currently. When I try to play videos I recorded it starts and slows to a stop in a second. Is there a more current version of vlc I could install to see if that fixes it? what is the ppa to do so?

FIX CRACKLING in VLC

Try adding tsched=0 to the load-module module-udev-detect line in /etc/pulse/default.pa so it reads:

    load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
