well, one of the first things I did was to reboot the computer  but I didn't turn off the printer. turning the printer off did the trick! thanks.

It's a classic, but I think it will work in your case.... and in this case, I mean turn off the printer and then reboot the computer.  Check to see if there is still a print job and if so, kill it.  Then turn the printer back on and hopefully all the demons will have been cast out.
