I ended up trying kernel.ubuntu.com and installed the kernel.  I rebooted and the nvidia driver didn't work.  I rebooted into the 3.8 kernel and the driver worked normally.  Maybe there's a bug in the kernel that keeps the nvidia driver from working.  I'm thinking about using an old Dell inspiron 350 for most of the stuff I do with the computer, and putting windows on this one so I can use it for something I need the extra cpu capacity for such as video editing or transcoding.  Then save up for a couple of months until I can afford a new motherboard and processor.  I think I'll also spend the time looking into finding a motherboard and processor combo that likes linux.  The last thing I want is to buy new hardware and end up with the same problem I have now.

Ah, sorry, I didn't account for you having an nvidia card before I recommended the upgrade.  The proprietary drivers are some of the last things to make it into the release.  Thats why I used my T60 as the guinea pig instead of one of my more used, powerful, laptops.  Are you trying to use the proprietary driver or nouveau?

It might be easier to temporarily switch your raring repository to saucy and tell it to grab the kernel, then switch the repositories back.

I tried it, but the Nvidia driver wouldn't work.  I tried to reinstall
it, but the installer gave an error message saying it couldn't
continue.  I guess I might have to wait until Next month when they
release it.

Is there anything keeping me from going to
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ downloading the kernel
from there and installing it?

For what it's worth, I'm running the 13.10 kernel in puppy slacko 5.6
on a Dell Precision 670 with one hyper-threaded CPU and it has
virtually "cured" the laggy ills of ubuntu and mint for me.   If  I
succeed in compiling original vi, I probably won't go back to the
popular distros. The speed is addicting.  Everything works as
advertised by Barry Kauler et al.   The learning curve is reasonable
and the system apps have friendly annotations.

I'll backup the current install then try that.

You might try installing the net yet released kubuntu 13.10 on it.
It's got the 3.11 kernel in it that might have fixed whatever is
causing the lockups.
I've been running it on a Lenovo T60 for a few weeks with no
problems at all.

I've spent the last week going through the kernel parameters for

kernel and trying different options.  So far this beast still locks
up.
I recall several months ago that this beast did not lock up when I
tried
Slackware.  I'm figuring something happens while Kubuntu is booting up
that doesn't happen when Slackware boots up.  Does anyone know what
that
might be?

I just bought a  Dell inspiron 350 yesterday.  I'm thinking of
reinfecting this thing with windows and using it only when I need the
extra processor power.  However I really don't want to do that.  I
will
be ever so thankful if anyone has an answer. Thanks.
