I changed a virtualization BIOS setting and it worked fine.

My guess is that you have installed a 32-bit VirtualBox and it is refusing to install a 64 bit OS.  It has nothing to do with the AMD bit.

I have an Intel machine.

VirtualBox refuses to install Ubuntu thinking it is tailored to AMD machines.

Although I'd like to stick to what I am used to, are there any other distros suitable for casual desktop use? (Preferably Debian based.)
