now I am running into a snafu....  sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/sdc
mkfs.vfat 3.0.13 (30 Jun 2012)
/dev/sdc: No medium found

mkfs.vfat 3.0.13 (30 Jun 2012)
/dev/sdc1: No such file or directory
