After a little investigation I found:
1. As a user-space VPN daemon, OpenVPN is compatible with SSL/TLS, RSA Certificates and X509 PKI, NAT, DHCP, and TUN/TAP virtual devices. OpenVPN is not compatible with IPSec, IKE, PPTP, or L2TP. (http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/341-openvpn-compatibility.html)
2. Android 4 comes with VPN type:
> PPTP
> L2TP/IPSec PSK
> L2TP/IPSec RSA
> IPSec Xauth PSK
> IPSec Xauth RSA
> IPSec Hybrid RSA
Which seems to say that I have to go with an "after market" app.
Back to my original question - since I don't seem to be able to bridge my vpn connection from android (no tap in the openvpn android app), how do I use a routed vpn connection (only tun available in the openvpn android app) to my router to access any server on my network?
Thanks,
Mark
Bob,
I am running the latest software on my tablet, so probably the same as you.
I think I have to set up the openvpn on my router. What is the native vpn on the tablet, and how do I setup openvpn pin my router?

You shouldn't have to run any special vpn software, if you go to settings and more, you can select vpn and set it up from there.

I have been doing some reading about it, and I am a little confused. What I want to do is access any server on the network from a remote location using my Android tablet or Debian laptop. I could just open some random ports and ssh into any of the boxes, but a VPN would be more challenging to setup...;)
I have not rooted my tablet (ASUS TF701), nor do I really want to. There is a non rooted version of openvpn for Android. But then, I read this article (https://www.grc.com/vpn/routing.htm) and came to the conclusion that I need a bridged vpn, so with more reading I have to use tap and not tun. My first roadblock - the Android version of openvpn does not support tap, just tun.
First question - do I have to use bridging (hence tap) to be attached to my network at home from a remote location with my Android tablet? Do I have to use tap? What would you recommend for setting up my vpn?
Thanks,Mark
