But replace those enterprise drives in the raid with SSD drives in a raid and what happens?

I just read some reviews on the Samsung 840 Pro series in a raid configuration and it is rather impressive.

For most intents and purposes an Enterprise system will be using RAID controllers, with acceleration, so a SD card IS not a benefit.  I have a Dell with SD single level drive that is slower, but it's probably due to Microsoft 7.

There are two major types of SSDs. Multi-level cells and single-level cells. Multi-level are cheaper and denser, but fail sooner and are slower. Single level are more expensive, but should fail less often.

With respect to performance, I'd be more suspicious of the software (and OS for that matter) controlling the drives rather than the drives themselves. If  the OS is tuned for HDD, then SSDs may not gain any benefit.

The High Performace MySQL blog posts data on SSD performance. Its a good reference point.

I have also found that in deference to their claims some of the SSDs are SLOWER than regular enterprise drives.
I believe this new technology leaves a lot to be desired.

I have a question about SSDs.  I've read that they like the USB thumb drives can be written to a certain number of times before they fail.  What is the expected lifetime of an SSD?  They're terribly expensive if they're only going to last 2 or 3 years.
