Could I do it with something else? I mean, if I put usb connectors on the ends of cat5 strands it wouldn't actually be usb; would it? I wish cannon would of put an rj45 port into it...... HEY.... look at that, they put a plug in it, that's why I couldn't see it. Well, I connected it to the modem but it still aint working. I connected via my laptop though..... there isn't 'just the printer'.

His computer is hard wired to the modem. The modem is hardwired to the modem. I would think that it would be considered a 'network printer'. But when I browse for the printer the only thing that shows is the printer attached to the linux box. I tried connecting to that but nothing printed.

It is an old pc without a wireless card. I'll try a wireless usb stick and if that doesn't work buy a wireless card..... unless someone is willing to donate one :o)

USB by default can't run that far. If you want it hard wired with USB, you will need to purchase a USB cable with inline repeaters. They can get very expensive, especially with the length you are talkng about, by the time you are done, it might be just as cheap for him to buy his own printer.
Is there a reason he can't also connect onto the printer via wireless?

the deal is that my brother's computer doesn't have wireless so I need
to hardwire it to the printer. The cable needs to go across the room (15
ft)- into a wall mount- out of the house- under the house (50 ft)- into
the house- out of a wall mount- to his computer (10 ft). WOW. That is
longer than I thought. that's around 75 feet long in total. hmmmmm....
I have an empty phone line (cat 3) there already could I use that?

1 - maybe, depends upon the printer.
2 - do you mean a computer into the printer, not a printer? Then it
is possible to make a cat5 cable into a USB cable, but you have to
change the connectors on the end to be USB - probably not worth the
effort. If the printer has cat5 (what, RJ45?) jacks then just
connect it to your network, again assuming the printer can do both.
(Mine can - probably can do all 3 but I have wireless turned off
on it so use usb and network)
I've taken the liberty of adding 1 and 2 below.

Subject: usb cord
(1) I now run my printer wirelessly. can I also hard wire a computer
into the
printer? I think so but I want to make sure.
(2) If you can hard wire a printer (I think you mean computer, as I
said above)
into the printer as well can cat5 be used to make a usb cord?
