youtube-dl -o <desiredfilename> --extract-audio --audio-format=mp3 "<webaddress>"
you don't need the '--extract-audio' or the 'audio-format' but you need the quotes (" "). There are a lot of options and (supposedly) it works with things other than youtube (never needed to try). For instance you can save it in other video/audio formats. Up also don't need the '-o' but if you don't use it you will get cryptic file names.

In Firefox I could click on the link and get an option to open with vlc or save. Right clicking gave me the save as option. Clicking on it in konqueror gave me the option to save or open with vlc. Joe I'm curious what browser you're using.

What is the procedure for downloading and saving to disk videos on
youtube and vimeo?
In particular, I found this really impressive video that I would
like to save and try editing with open shot:
http://vimeo.com/18198228
On the page, there is a link labeled: "Download" and when I click on
that link, four download options are listed (various resolutions)
but when I click on any of those links, the video plays, but I
cannot find that the video is downloaded and saved
anyplace on my system. What am I doing wrong?
In this case, assuming that you're using Firefox, either:
1) right-mouse-click on the individual movie link and choose "Save Link As..."
or
2) While the video is playing in the browser, use File -> Save Page As...
(using the menu at the top of the browser window.)
I use the minitube application to download from Youtube, which is a completely
different beast/situation.
