I assume those would be in the configuration.php file. One possible approach is to delete that file and see if you can trigger Joomla to redo the installation now that you have the MySQL set up correctly. It wouldn't be a bad refresher. ???

Well, this is strange: I can start mysql as my user but not with sudo.

$ sudo mysql
ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)

So what do I need to do?

I've already installed it on my local machine. The reason I'm thinking I need a database for each webpage is that I created a link to the webpage's location in /var/www in an experiment to be able to not store the page in /var/www but rather in ~/Documents/<etc> . I would recommend understanding the basics before trying to install Joomla on your local LAMP install.
