I figured out what the problem is.... in the live version I get three video adapter choices. nvidia (the default), AMD/ATI and intel. When I select the firsttwo choices it doesn't load x and it starts flashing but if I choose intel then x loads but video is jerky (not sure about sound though. So the installed version is selecting the default.

I just figured out the xserver is resetting itself when it flashesI figured that out when I moved the cursor and then it flashed and when x came back the cursor was back to its home position.

X -configure told me to run X -config <path>/xorg.conf.new which kind of got X working. X  was a screen of (best I can describe) gray weaves.. Then, after about 10 seconds it started to flash again on 10 second intervals with one second of nothing.

Your xorg.conf file is trying to load the type1 X module, which this distro
doesn't have.  This is... odd if the distro ran an automatic X configuration
tool while it was being installed.  You may be able to generate an X config
file that'll work better by running "X -configure" when X isn't running,
although you may have to edit that file and change its default color depth to
24 if it defaults to 8.  8-bit color is practically unusable in this modern
age....
