Now for the $64 question, what do I do about it?  In my case I don't have a switch, but do have a router.  And the problem shows itself when I remove the router.

I have seen this happening...
I was copying a file from one box to another when the copy stopped, waited and resumed.  I traced it down to a Linksys switch that, other than that, didn't exhibit any other problem.
I didn't have time to investigate the issue then and I lost track of the switch, but my plan was to take a tcpdump trace on both ends and investigate from there.
I doubt that a layer 2 problem will show up in the trace though, and from what I saw, and what you said about killing the dinosaur download, looks like a level 2 problem to me...

Hi,
Here's a problem that has me stumped.  Using my linux box I've found I have trouble downloading large files from some sites.  I tried to download a 200MB file from celestiamotherlode.net.  It took a few seconds for the download to begin.  Then after a few seconds, the download would stop for a few seconds.  Then it would resume.  I tried a 647MB CD image from debian.org and downloaded it with no problem.  I went to mirrors.easynews.com and tried to download a copy of the same image file.  I had the same problem with the download stopping for a few seconds, starting again, stopping a few seconds, starting again and so on.
Here's the interesting part.  I have xp on the dinosaur so I can play a few games on it.  The dinosaur had no problem downloading the files from celestiamotherlode.net.  I had no trouble downloading multiple files from the same site using the dinosaur.
At this point I had both machines connected to a netgear router. The router was connected to the dsl modem which was in bridging mode.  I unplugged the linux box from the router, connected it directly to the dsl modem and put the dsl modem in routing mode. Then with the linux box connected directly to the dsl modem, I tried again.  I had the same problem.
Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?  Thanks in advance to anyone who can point me in the right direction.
Thanks
Derek
