Did you tell synaptic to update.. oh, sorry, ‘Reload’… its database first?  Please try that and then try the download of permagic.  In fact, I can almost guarantee you that will fix it, as I just tried to download perlmagic using synaptic, and it failed.  THEN I did ‘Reload’ and tried again, and viola’, it worked.  (You may also then have to update qt4, but oh, well J)

(BTW, I said default ‘route’ (I hope!), not ‘root’.  Say ‘route ‘ to see if you have a default one. ;-)  It is likely that you do, since you can do web browsing and email (and since the pings worked), but just wanted to clarify that.  Since ping worked, you can skip the ‘check your default route’ step :-)

Okay....

Yes, I am connected to the internet. How do I know this? Because I'm talking to you.

There no proxy.

Do  I have a default root? I don't think so?

 ping inficad.com

PING inficad.com (216.19.223.17) 56(84) bytes of data.

64 bytes from www.getnet.net (216.19.223.17): icmp_req=1 ttl=56 time=81.0 ms

 ping archive.ubuntu.com

When I try to d/l perlmagic with synaptic or apt it tells me:

First, if you cannot download stuff using apt-get, you first need to find out why, or you need to use your web browser to manually download all the files it wants…

Lets diagnose your network connection and other random things first:

Are you connected to the internet?  Why do you give the answer you give?  (“Because web browsing (works/fails)”, etc)  If web browsing works, does it have a proxy set up?  If so, is the proxy set up system-wide or just for the web browser?

Do you have a default route?

What happens when you say ‘ping inficad.com’?  How about ‘’?

What does ‘traceroute -n archive.ubuntu.com’ say?

Also, let’s look at apt. have you used synaptic (it’s a gui over apt-get and friends)?  Try that, tell it to update the files list, select perlmagick to install, say ‘apply’, and see what happens.

Also, what version of ubuntu are you using (ok, I see its precise, but I don’t remember the mapping from name to number, sorry)?  If its unsupported you won’t find any packages – you’ll have to fix your repositories…

Just a few random and wild guesses…
