well... I'll tell you... I deleted known_hosts on the computer that will not rsync or ssh and ran the reset command to find no gain in the situation. I the tried to ssh from  the laptop and after logging in I was presented with a message that I needed to reboot. I did but there was no improvement in the situation.

AuthorizedKeyFile    %h/.ssh/authorized_keys  (default is commented out)

If it isn't commented out and you still can't access simple ssh then comment it out and restart ssh.  Once you have simple known_host resolution and want to reestablish keys than remove the # write and save the sshd_config and restart ssh
