To expand on this there is a page that gives a list of things that you specifically need for plone running on Ubuntu. I did an apt-get of this list and the plone "installer" ran without error.

okay, apparently that got rid of the 'bits' error but now  I get :

Your missing dependencies that plone needs to build properly. I look for an install readme file and look there first. Not sure which distro you but I also use apt-file with Ubuntu

sudo apt-get install apt-file

apt-file update

apt-file search bits/predefs.h

You'll then have to install the package that it says to. You'll have to keep doing this for each missing dep. It takes time but you'll eventually chip away the issues so it'll build. If no, you'll want to try and find a pre-built package.
