Okay... I fixed the desktop! I can now load it in 3.1.4. When I was unpacking the kernel I was entering
dpkg -i x y z
It liked:
dpkg -i x
dpkg -i y
dpkg -i z
better than all on the same line.
But the laptop is another matter. I figured out how to boot into text mode with the 3.1.4 kernel (recovery mode) but x won't start and I don't know what to do. When I type sudo startx the screen just goes blank like it does when I don't load in recovery mode.--

Okay, here is the deal: The computer with Mint on it will not boot from the hard drive. Only from the CD. As such I have Mint running on it. On The Ububntu system (I have two computers going) I installed the 3.1.4 kernel too but it didn't like it either. The screen just goes blank if I run 3.1.4 and it gives me the kernel boot option if I restart it (every other time). I tried synaptic (had to apt-get it) to remove the kernel but it wasn't in the package list. I think that is because it is a newer kernel.
