Okay... I fixed the desktop! I can now load it in 3.1.4. When I was unpacking the kernel I was entering

     dpkg -i x y z

It liked:

     dpkg -i x
     dpkg -i y
     dpkg -i z

better than all on the same line.
But the laptop is another matter. I figured out how to boot into text mode with the 3.1.4 kernel (recovery mode) but x won't start and I don't know what to do. When I type sudo startx the screen just goes blank like it does when I don't load in recovery mode.

Sorry about my last message. I wrote it last night at around 3:30 in the morning.

Okay, here is the deal: The computer with Mint on it will not boot from the hard drive. Only from the CD. As such I have Mint running on it. On The Ububntu system (I have two computers going) I installed the 3.1.4 kernel too but it didn't like it either. The screen just goes blank if I run 3.1.4 and it gives me the kernel boot option if I restart it (every other time). I tried synaptic (had to apt-get it) to remove the kernel but it wasn't in the package list. I think that is because it is a newer kernel.

Hmmmm..... I changed the boot order in Mint and it now is giving the option of choosing kernels (on every other power down). Now I can boot the laptop too.

Sounds kinda like your video drivers are freaking out.  Can you still boot to external media?

Why in the world don't I leave good enough alone! Well, I installed mint and everything was perfect. The grafics were good, the sound was good, everything was good after I installed the 3.1.4 kernel. Then I found out I wasn't taking advantage of my 64bit processor so I reinstalled with a 64bit operating system. That made things slower. So I reinstalled the 32 bit os and everything went to hell! The screen now 'jumps ' around like it is switching between desktops sometimes. I tried to install the 3.1.4 kernel but that didn't work. uname -r reveals me kernel is still 3.0.0-12.... well, at least it hasn't crashed..... ohhhhh right after the kernel finished installing it did crash (the caps lock light started blinking and it froze). and the panicing has started! It doesn't tell me it has paniced but the caps lock button starts flashing and it locks up like in a panic.
So I was thinking that perhaps this was because I extracted the .deb files through the GUI this time; so I did it through a shell and now after the option to enter bios the screen goes black. I tried hitting the escape key after the option to enter bios but it does nothing. It hasn't even entered runtime 1 (me thinks). Eek gads!
