this is so weird..... I pressed escape and a screen appeared giving me an option of kernels to load with.... the first on the list was 3.1.4. Wouldn't that one have been erased when I reinstalled? or else did it keep it because I chose 'upgrade'? Regardless, I choose to start a previous version and started with kernel 3.0.13 (I think). How do IO make that the default kernel so I don't have to press escape and all that?

That was why I was reinstalling..... didn't want the new kernel. Yeah.... I know. I could of just reinstalled the old kernel but I'm tired and not thinking through things...... which soulnds like me when I'm not tired!

Press escape after it starts getting graphical and you should see where it us hanging... That will be more informative than "it's black" for you.

Also, is this the box you just installed a new kernel on?

When I turn my computer on it goes through the boot sequence ad then the screen goes blank. Not blank limke there is no power to it but kinda a bark purple. I've tried reinstalling the system (to no avail) so the only thing I can think of is that the refurbished HD is toast. But when I load the live CD I can look at the contents of the hard drive. Does anyone know what this sounds like?
