I turns out to be a printer driver problem. My earlier comment was incorrect - the HPLIP driver dos print the images on the page, the cups driver does not.

Gimp would have rendered everything to a bitmap, so it would have simply needed to send a bitmap to the printer rather than some postscript with embedded images.

Makes sense and a good work around to keep in mind.
