I have an hp L7688 all in one printer/scanner/fax on my network. I am running Debian testing on my computer. I have been able to control the scanner in this printer for years from my computer - it always works out of the box by installing hpaio, which I have done on several other machines. Recently, probably due to an update/upgrade dance (?), xsane no longer recognizes the scanner; it only finds my video camera (which it found since first installing the camers with the scanner). hpaio and xsane-hpaio are installed (the backends for this printer/scanner). When I run scanimage -L, only the video camera is found. Anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot what packages are missing so I can get my scanner back?
There seems to be a backend dependency for this:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=512596
To troubleshoot your installation, we would need:
"hp-check -t"(Please post the output)
Here is the output:
mark@orca:~$ hp-check -t

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies are installed
to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball has the proper
dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).
Initializing. Please wait...

Then we are going to refer you to the excellent installation instructions for the problems we WILL find.
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro

3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).I think that patch may already be in my version of the code. When I run hp-check -r it tells me:
'hpaio' in '/etc/sane.d/dll.conf'...
'hpaio' in '/etc/sane.d/dll.d/hplip'...
OK, found. SANE backend 'hpaio' is properly set up.
However, I get this error from hp-check -r

warning: Printer is not HPLIP installed. Printers must use the hp: or hpfax: CUPS backend to function in HPLIP.
That appears as if the printer must use hp or hpfax or a CUPS backend must be placed? Both backends are in the hplip debian package, and that is installed.
When I look at localhost:631 and check the printer installation for this printer, I have 2 options - hpcups or hpijs. Both give the same error. I checked the Debian repositories for the hp and hpfax cups backends and found both in the hplip package, which is installed. But I don't get either option when I install the printer using cups.
Thanks for any other ideas you may have!
