Unless it's for a specific computer (such as Dell) it will work fine.
Some OEM disks detect whether their running on the vendor hardware or not and refuse to boot if they're not.
As long as it's a regular XP install disk and not a 'restore' disk you'll be fine.
I really hate how classes are written for specific software... CIS105 is a perfect example... class title is 'Survey of Computer Information Systems'...
It should be called intro to Microsoft Office 2007 (or whatever the latest version currently is) and the history of Computer Information Systems. They justify it by saying 'that's what the students will encounter in the real world' :(
Thankfully Linux has a large enough foothold in the server market that classes are now being taught.
As far as dual+ booting... install Linux last. Microsoft loves to obliterate the linux boot loader.
Right now the lab system has Vista on it.
What evil consequences will befall me if I get the OEM version of XP?
It is about $100 less than the generic XP shrink wrapped box.
