I think you also don't want the battery in if you only run it while it is plugged in.

i am also guilty of this, but the kind of batteries that are in laptops, need
to be almost fully discharged once in a while, as lithium ion batteries need
that.
periodically, I will unplug, and let it go down to like less than 4 min left,
and then plug it back in.
i've had 2 batteries, go out on me because of this.
