thanks guys -- OK, the keyboard works "after" Ubuntu loads up - can I then assume that it not the problem?  The machine is not in front of me...

Searching the forums, I don't find much, BUT, looks like I could hit "e" and edit - changing the boot options so that XP is first??

Would that work?
