My mail use is very different that others, since I am operating at Defcon Level 3 most of the time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEFCON) due to security work, public persona. 

ssmtp works great for outgoing mail to gmail:

mailx and msmtp work too:

I also just use Sendmail SMTP/TLS to gmail (with cox - they limit ports):

As for gmail's free ssmpt service, I haven't looked into it. I figure
there's gotta be some sort of limit, catch, or something I would find
objectionable. "There's no free lunch".
