I use Geany but pretty sure that is Linux only. When I lived in the windows world I used notepad++ it is free(as in beer) and did okay. For larger projects I use bluefish unfortunately I think that is Linux/Mac only... Really if your not getting overly complex you can use notepad. The advantage especially as a newb to something like notepad++ is context highlighting.
