The main problem with your hardware is the rarity of them. I did also have the x-fi card and worse yet i had digital input speakers. The way i did it was installing the creative drivers. If you do want to play games wine does not have good dx support, and if you don't mind cedega does support games better but it does cost 50 bucks a year.

Im getting ready to roll linux back onto my main desktop, however
previously i had some issues getting things to run gracefully under
wine with the Radeon 2900Xt i have in here. or with the Creative X-Fi
for sound. the on-board works, but well its on-board and sucks
(audiophile without budget).

This was all running ubuntu 8.04 and 8.10 later. are there any other
distributions that people can suggest that might have a littel better
interaction with these slightly recalcitrant devices?

A mouse trap, placed on top of your alarm clock, will prevent you from
rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.
