dmesg doesn't say anything like what you say it should say in your post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=691226. It says:

or: return code = 0x8000002
[  394.634497] sr0: Current: sense key=0x0
[  394.634500]     ASC=0x0 ASCQ=0x0
[  396.410520] sr 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x8000002

and the last three lines  just keep repeating.

Perhaps I set the vendor and product ID incorrectly. I typed exactly as you instructed:

sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1199 product=0x0120

I have experience with EDVO CDMA "broadband" cards.

This is a simple ppp connection.  I had to do a kernel rebuild for an old Ubuntu system (3 years ago).  I set one up for Peter Koegel also (under Gentoo).  The hard part is getting the settings for the pppd.conf - so write down your connection specifics (username/password, everything - gateway, from your current card before rebooting/rebuilding).

Here's the Ubuntu guide:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=691226

Choose a livecd and test it there first before rebuilding your box.

You can always ghost copy the XP install from the drive to say a Terrabyte USB (or jumpdrive) [under $150.00] and then restore it later?

This is really easy now that the drivers are there for USB devices in recent distros!
