Tis true :)  STDIN -> STDOUT -> STDIN -> STDOUT -> Desired output
All Asterisk bundles bundle an open source operating system, asterisk or freeswitch, gui front end tools, and sometimes hylafax.  Most are built on a linux or BSD distribution which is another cobbled group of software.
The gui is the glue that makes it seem like one system but it is really a hodge-podge of open source software working together. 
In a way it is a thing of beauty :)
Things that were never intended to work together can and do!
