I find greasemonkey verry helpful with the better gmail scripts from userscripts.org..

I'm using a client that's pretty much GMail for the command line. It's
called sup. It's written in Ruby, and available in the gem repos.

gem install sup

I think it's in the Ubuntu repos as well.
