What are the errors?  Where are you hanging?

When you boot into any Linux - you can start with nofb (no framebuffer) or nopcmcia or noacpi.

Did you try booting into safe mode?

Take your machine name and go to Ubuntu forums - search for others who had your issues.

Once you complete the installation, you can formalize your startup options as default passed to grub (or lilo).

If this is just a VESA Video card X11 issue, that's going to be solved in a similar manner.

Linux is like a good partner - it WILL tell you very clearly what it's problem is.  Boot into single user mode and check the logs!

For the past week or so, I've been running Firefox 3.0.4 on Ubuntu
8.10,(HP laptop ze4400us) and haven't run into anything bad yet. In
fact, I have to say this is the first install of Ubuntu I have done that
I actually *like*! In the past, I've usually run Mepis, PClinux, or
Vector, and had a few issues with Firefox acting odd especially after
surfing Youtube, but this one seems happy enough, even with compiz
running in cube mode.
