I would install ntfs-3g drivers, and be sure that "fstab", which is located in the /etc directory shows the 3g driver

here is an EXAMPLE, do NOT copy this as your drive ID numbers WILL be different:

# /dev/hda1
UUID=0C98B3B498B39B22 /media/hda1             ntfs-3g          defaults,umask=007,gid=46             0       1
# /dev/hda2
UUID=E8D47B1FD47AEF66 /media/hda2             ntfs-3g          defaults,umask=007,gid=46             0       1
# /dev/hdb1
UUID=72D080CDD080994D /media/hdb1             ntfs-3g          defaults,umask=007,gid=46             0       1

Ubuntu uses a program called Synaptic to handle packages. Go to
System, Administration, Synaptic and enter your password when
prompted. Once in there, choose libraries from the panel on the left
and about 2/3rd of the way down I see libntfs9. (you can just click on
one of the package names and start typing libntfs and it will bring
you very close to it). Click the check mark next to it and hit the
apply button. Hope this works for you.

 Do you know if the drive is formatted as FAT or NTFS? You might need
to install the NTFS libraries.

 I have a dell precision m90 laptop and a 250gb freeagent external hdd.
I just reformatted and installed ubuntu 7.10 on the laptop. I have all
my files and what not stored on the external. When running live from
the disc, I could access the drive but now that it's installed, it says
the drive is unmountable. Would I be better off just waiting until the
installfest and asking there(I want to set this up as a windows
xp/ubuntu dual boot) or is there some little tick box that I'm not seeing?

 it's formatted to ntfs. Where do I get the libraries and how do I install
them?

I think the hdd got corrupted somewhere along the line.  I installed the libntfs3g and it still said it was unable to mount.  I'm just going to wait until saturday and go to the installfest to try and get everything worked out. Thanks for all the help though guys.  This is the whole reason why I want to use linux.
