Slight update, depending on your setup (I'm guessing something Debian
based ;)  I think you can just change the gconf keys for this:

ted@tres:~$ gconftool -g /desktop/gnome/interface/font_name
Sans 10
ted@tres:~$

You can set it with "-s"
