Not logging into root but you can setup an ssh server and use "putty" or
another terminal emulator to access the command line, then for those
actions that require root either use sudo or su to root.

In fact, with the ssh server runing, you can ssh into the box with the -X option and run GUI stuff using the xserver on you local machine.  Nothing is display on the home machine at all.
