Looks like I will be doing the USB HD solutions.

While I like tape solution, the cost doesn't pay.  For a tape drive, it would be about $300 (very cheap estimate).

For that amount, I could get multiple drives (Fry's had a 320GB for $80) and just use them. 

I think I'll just use the USB drives.

IMHO: tapes suck and are not only unreliable but you can't keep track of
how bad bc they sit around not being connected to anything.  When they
go bad--you don't know it until you try to read from it and it's too
late.  At least with a hard drive you can run diagnostics on it like the
smart tools and you generally know when one starts flaking out.

You might look at using Blue-Ray or HD DVD discs since they are bigger
than DVD.

external USB hard drives might work well.  Rotate through 3 or four
periodically changing them out or something.
