I just installed kubuntu from the live CD on an ibm t40 with xp
(no install/rescue xp cd) and now have a grub error 16 so can't
boot anything. I've searched the net, but have not found a way
to restore mbr and salvage what is on the hd. Can't find a way
to restore mbr on my knoppix cd.

how can I fix this problem?

There is a utility (install-mbr) for restoring the windoze mbr on the latest
systemrescuecd (added in version 0.3.2, 2007-01-10).
