which (per rms at least) means [/is] Gnu/Linux;
...and perhaps (it should be seen as "implied", that it)
should be interpreted here, as
a reference to the part of Gnu/Linux
[that is, Gnu] that did exist "as of" 1987.
(Gnu goes further back...)

Linux support, no doubt, came later than 1987 since Linux Torvalds
didn't enroll in the University of Helsinki until 1988 and didn't
announce Linux until August 1991.
