As I was typing out a question concerning getting a 2.4 kernel it occured
to me that I may be able to use the power of apt to get a vanilla version.
So I looked in synaptic and there it is..... 2.4.27 .....

I installed it and the headers package and things are running quicker. So did
snaptic install the 2 4 kernel?

After you reboot, you can type 'uname -a' to see what kernel you are running.
