Make sure your ethernet adapters on your PCs are set to fixed 100mb/full duplex. Then set the ports to the same. Your problem could be in the auto-negotiation.

Also, make sure that you do a manual "no shutdown" on the ports you want.

When you plug in the cables, do you have green ports or amber?

You want to use VLAN 1.

The Ethernet Interface should look something like the following...
interface FastEthernet0/1
switchport mode dynamic desirable

Program VLAN1...
interface Vlan1
description Management Interface
ip address a.b.c.d x.x.x.x
no ip redirects
no ip unreachables
no ip proxy-arp
end

VLAN 1 should be enabled by default but to check type the "show vlan".  This
should tell you which ports are on what VLANs.

Tell me if this helps,
Gilbert

Subject: configuring cisco catalyst 4500

Has anyone ever configured a cisco catalyst 4500?  We have erased it to
reset it
to defaults (bc we didn't have the password) and can't seem to get it to do
anything.  We have tried configuring dhcp on it by setting up a pool and
turning the service on.  We have tried to assign ip addresses to ports
manually.  We have tried setting up vlans.  nothing works.  The two test
machines we plug in can NEVER see each other (static ip's or by requesting
dhcp
from the switch).  the dhcp stats on the switch never change so it's not
even
seeing the requests from the machines.

How do we turn on the ports so that they can use dhcp?
