Jon, Thanks - that is what I assumed as a minimum of impact.  In fact, vmstat seems to be showing I have not even used swap for anything.  I think my only issue is disk space and I have a large section of this HD without a partition so was already planning to use it.

You mentioned an error, so I was telling you how to deal with the error. You
got it because arts is not installed, or does not have all the dependencies.
Though you don't have 'KDE' installed, you may have many parts of it. Likely
kdelibs and kdebase, or parts of them anyway if you are running amarok. As
well as parts of kdenetwork. Having 'KDE' installed is much like
having 'Gnome' installed. There are many big parts and you can have some
small parts, but not the whole installed. You may not have the desktop
environment, but I bet if you have amarok installed, you probably have a few
other kde apps you don't realize.

Yup, the error was that arts was not present (though not clear from the message).  There was an option to not use it which I then checked.  Thing was that I could not tell anything about what I was telling it not to use.  A web search was not forthcoming with info either. Most references just said it was the arts engine for AmaroK which is a totally useless description.  I did find one reference that seemed to say it was an add-on to AmaroK to support sound as if it could have no sound without it (clearly false since I have sound without it).

1) You wont lose much functionality, if any.
2) Not really, freedesktop is working towards moving freely between desktops.

I had heard that and hope they get it done.  "Duping" all those libraries is pretty silly (yes I know they aren't really dupes).

3) gtop, mem

These do not appear to be present on the system (ubuntu 6.06).  OTOH, standard top is as well as many usual ways of looking at memory useage which do not seem to show any issues.  Perhaps those are KDE apps or maybe just not installed by default?
