I THINK this model Thinkpad (R51), among others has some sort of wonky PATA-SATA bridge, where the disk controller is a SATA controller with a built in adapter to accept PATA drives (but without any way of removing said adapter to install a SATA drive).  Perhaps that's what the hde is referencing?

Either way, I was able to edit the /etc/fstab and changed the /dev/hde1 and /dev/hde5 entries for the boot and swap to /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda5.  After a reboot, everything appears to be working correctly.

/dev/hde should be an extra controller.

Do you have on board SATA? Do you have a PCI SATA controller?

If you boot a Live CD what device is the disk on? What's in the installed
/etc/fstab?

I believe the shell you're getting is mostly meant for debugging the
kernel. It's been a while since I've looked at it.
