I was actually thinking about that, but for reasons of personal gratification, I'd really like to know what's going on and how to fix it (especially considering my main job is XP tech support).  I find for me that I learn best by not only knowing what the fix it, but also the why and how.

It could be an Ubuntu issue. Maybe you could try an Edgy based version, or a non-Ubuntu liveCD (Knoppix is also Debian based, so you could even play with the package installs on it).
