OK, tried that, thank you.
    But then I get a very basic looking panel which has the title GNU GRUB version 0.97, and the same booting options as before. When I select WINDOWS, and Enter, I get a message:
 
    Error 12: Invalid device requested
    Press any key to continue...
 
    which then takes me back to the GRUB panel.
 
    No boot to Windows.

Try adding 'makeactive' as below:
