Was the last owner using this function?

They may have changed the setting in the OBP to display only.

Normally when a Sun is first started, even the POST should be seen over the serial (if they were displaying ful diags).

Then at least you could determine whether a component is faulty.

Also, if it has no video card, then just shop araound for an old ATI Rage64/128/3D. I have had luck dropping them in as replacements before on the PCI Bus based Suns.

Also, I gave up on E420r's, they were VERY trouble prone. I run SunFire V440s, a LOT more stable.

Good Luck

Thanks, Kevin. I've connected to other Sun boxen before. ;) I have a
Netra T1, a SparcStation 20, an Ultra 5, and they all work fine. I just
got my hands on this E420R, which was supposedly working.

I'm afraid I've got a bad component somewhere and it's choking before it
gets to OpenBoot. I'm just hoping there's some silly thing I'm not
thinking of. I'm much rather say "Doh!" right now than try to isolate
the problem blind.

FYI, I've tried both serial A and B, using 9600-8-N-1. I get nothing. No
garbabe chars. Just nothing.
