I thought my bookmarks tabs were not being removed, but it appears an extension actually was adding a another row of icons. My bad.. using the view->toolbars->bookmarks toolbar did indeed add/remove the bookmarks.

View -> Toolbars -> Bookmarks Toolbar

If that's not an option, then what version of Firefox are you using?  Also, do
I misunderstand you that you want the bookmarks *toolbar* to go away?
