Great Idea:

We (Thomson/West, purveyors of Westlaw) can offer five Dell Optiplex GX1 computers + IBM 17" monitor.  These are something like 500MHz P2 boxen.  CD and floppy (no CD writer).

I don't have the tech chops to do much more than deliver the hardware, etc, but I'm willing to do what I can.  I think this is a tremendous idea.

Let me know if / how you want me to proceed.  These boxen are downtown (Copper Square).

Siri, in my limited experience with linux and usb
cameras, I have found that some of the newer versions
of linux 'leave behind' the drivers for older
technology camera's. Ex: I, not being into camera's
much, had a JamCam kids $30 camera w/usb. Knoppix
supports it in Knoppix 3.2 and I think 3.3, but not in
later versions. Luckily I didn't toss the 3.2 cdrom.

So make sure the camera works with the version you are
using, and IF you pay much for the camera, KEEP the
cdrom's just incase you have to re-install the
software to get the camera to work!! Or the drivers
are not available except on that install or Live cd.

Just my two cents worth.

too much drama

someone who created the web page thought it worked for him. Simply tell
the webmaster that it doesn't work for you.

No reason to get all worked up.

It is interesting to see someone first, resort to name calling, and second,
be so hard line.

People need to have respect for others and their ideas.  Name calling is not
respect.

I can use the collective's advise on this. from my logs I see that one
IP address tried to login to one of my servers 32 times they tried 16
different user name / passwd combos.  How should I deal with this?

I know all IP addresses fo people authorized to login to this server
this is not one of them.

Monitor it as you are doing, verify to your satisfaction that your
systems are secure against the kinds of assault you see as well as those
reported by others, and then forget it. (It never stops.)

       whois -h whois.arin.net off.end.ing.ip

will give you the whois record for the ip, or tell you the whois server
to go to (eg, at APNIC).  your version of whois may figure this out for
you so the -h argument might be optional.

I get what you describe daily on my server.  The machines are botted and
I don't think there's much point to complaining.

Spending your time keeping your machine locked down is the best response
to this as opposed to drafting abuse emails for every last IP that
shows up.  if they in fact got in, then I'd of course be banging down
their door.

moin, moin,

the state is putting evacuees up at the coliseum/fairgrounds. They will
likely be there for a month ( longer at other locations ). They do have
cell phones, but do not have Net connectivity.

I have approached the state about setting up a few boxen for the evacuees
to use for email and resumes.

The IT department is interested in assistance in getting the evacuees
setup with Net access.

I already have a few volunteers for setting up the network.

We might be able to get boxen from STRuT, but we won't know until
tomorrow. If that falls through I'll likely need help getting donations
that we can setup in the next few days.

I would like to say this is a PLUG effort ( most everyone involved thus
far is from PLUG ). Is that cool with everyone?

If this goes well we might be asked to do the same thing in Tucson and
maybe at ASU as well.

ciao,

der.hans
