Visioneer doesn't even support their own products on windows beyond what you get in the box. I've had two of their older scanners that worked with win98, they never released drivers for 2000/XP. I ended up throwing them away. For awhile I was using the scanner under linux using vmware, but it was more trouble than it was worth.

There are quite a few scanners supported by sane:

Drivers in Linux depend on two things..
1) the manufacturer releases linux drivers for them (starting to happen more now)
2) the linux driver guys have to reverse engineer the driver.

In reality, very few scanners seem to work with the
exception of one brand. I have to 'go to the darkside'
to scan.

Thank God the scanner works there.

So don't be disappointed Mike, very few seem to work.

THE resource for scanning under Linux is the SANE

There doesn't seem to be a page or listing for the
5600 in the quick
search I did. However, there are listing for the
5300 and 5800 USB and
neither work. So, it's very unlikely that the 5600
would work.
