My first network admin job was netware 4.11 and NT 3.5 for Windows 95 (Later 98). NetWare was a directory service not a NAS even though many people used it for just that, so more than File sharing, but it also managed rights and access for devices all over. NT was added in our case to supply some additional Windows network functions that netware didn't do well in the 4.x days.
