Unless you have a direct physical connection to your internet provider (you don't, unless you live in a datacenter), there's a device (typically a router or modem) between your device and whatever is carrying your internet (cable, the phone line, fiber, etc.). It's *that* device that's up and that you're connected to that your computer shows you have a wired connection to. That device then connects to the internet, which is separate from your local connection.
