Mike, You might find this helpful - http://www.scantips.com/basics01.html. 16 bit color depth means that the scanner is using 16 bits for each color when it digitizes an image. Each pixel would have 2^16 x 2^16 x 2^16 possible color options. 16 bits/color means 2^16 or 65,536 shades of each color (red, blue, green) 8 bits/color mean 2^8 or 256 shades of each color (red, blue, green), or each pixel can be painted with a color from a palette of 1.6 million colors (2^8 x 2^8 x 2^8) Most of the time all you need is 8 bits per color for a total of 24 bits of color per pixel.
